“Classical music is a very general term which normally refers to the standard music of countries in the Western world. It is music that has been composed by musicians who are trained in the art of writing music (composing) and written down in music notation so that other musicians can play it.” – that’s the broad description which you’ll find on Wikipedia.
Much can be said about this form of music and it’s fair to say that we all have our own interpretations. For me, it’s the way the instruments work together to tell a story. If I watch a theatre production, there is nothing quite like a live orchestra accompanying the acting and storyline. Classical music has a wonderful way of envoking different emotions – perhaps that is why its so widely used in film scores. Drama, suspense, happiness, sadness… classical music has it covered.
As for composers, take your pick – Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Debussy, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Wagner… The list is endless and I’m sure you have your favourites.
Instruments used in classical pieces include the piano, clarinet, double bass, violin, trumpet and others. They all have their own unique characteristics and each bring something special to the music. For a humorous take on these instruments, check out this article which I enjoyed. I love the banter between classical musicians – it can be hilarious at times.
